“First they came for the communists,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a Jew.

Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me…”

Martin Niemöller”

Thursday May 24 marked the 4th anniversary of the arrests and imprisonment of seven Baha'i leaders in Iran. To mark this infamous date a meeting was held at the Baha’i centre on Bloor Street in Toronto to raise public awareness of the unmitigated attacks by the Iranian Government on their resident members of the Baha’i faith.

The presentations included speakers and a short film. Adding to the reality of situation was the ever present knowledge that many members of the audience were individuals who had suffered personally at the hands of Iran’s blind tyranny.

The speakers were Nika Khanjani, whose uncle is one of the seven Iranian Bahai leaders (known as “Yaran”) provided some personal accounts of Yaran’s four years of imprisonment; Susanne Tamas of the Canadian Baha’i Community. Gloria Nafziger of Amnesty International also addressed the audience.  There was also a screening of the short documentary: “Education Under Fire”, concerning the banning of Baha’i students in Iran from post-secondary education and the educators who were imprisoned for tutoring them. (Speakers pictured above left)

When I heard the stories of unjustified arrests and incarcerations of so many innocents, including educators; even mothers with their children; all placed into dangerous jails with poor food and terrible sanitation, I was shocked and appalled. In one case the child accompanying the mother into prison was only two years old.

By the end of the evening I felt the way Martin Niemöller German pastor and theologian felt when he realized that he had stood ignorantly by while his country’s leader Adolph Hitler had methodically attacked, incarcerated and murdered those he felt to be an insult to the country. (Quotation above right…).

Only when Martin himself was arrested did he realize how his own ignorance gave sanction to the horror.

I too had not taken the time to fully investigate what was happening in Iran, a part of this planet we all call home..

Surely as an Interfaith supporter and worker my voice needs to be raised in light of these atrocities. If I am to believe in Unity within Diversity am I not responsible to respond to the plight of those of other faiths? When the stricken hand of anyone anywhere reaches out for help against religious oppression am I not responsible to assist in any manner I am able?

I invite you the reader to familiarize yourself with this unrelenting attack of members of the Baha’i faith. To do so visit: http://iran.bahai.us/

Peace and Love to all from all of us at Interfaith Unity!

We hope you enjoy the offerings in this issue and feel grateful that we can so freely and openly communicate such varieties of faith.

Terry

In this film, he sets out to meet others like him; young people struggling between modern and ancient, East and West. BOOK RELEASE

“MINEFIELDS & MIRACLES – WHY GOD AND ALLAH NEED TO TALK”

Review of Ruth Broyde Sharone’s new book by Leslie Mezei, Founding Publisher of Interfaith Unity News.

“This personal memoir (see www.MinefieldsandMiracles.com ) of a global interfaith activist is a must read for all interfaith activists and communicators and for all peace lovers. A memoir, like this one,  works best when it has a consistent theme that can ground the reader while enjoying the myriad personal events and revelations. This is the first book I am aware of that highlights the many “minefields” associated with this work, such as the deeply held prejudices, the egos and power struggles, the faux pas we all make. It shines the light that much stronger on the “miracles” that keep happening in interfaith encounters, such as the times when a dialogue project or film has to be prepared on a very tight deadline, and it miraculously runs on “God’s time” (Ruth’s expression) with everything and everybody coming together in an amazing flow. One of the many, many pictures Ruth shares with us in the book is at Toronto’s Scarboro Missions, where she showed us her film:  “Why God and Allah Need to Talk”   I was particularly impressed by her insisting that at each event she runs, each person identify a next step in our interfaith work, with a commitment to follow through. In the book, she gives us lots of “interfaith pilates” exercises, and discussion questions for groups.”

SIKH AWARDED PAPAL KNIGHTHOOD

The Tablet: 25 April 2012

A leader of Birmingham's Sikh community has been awarded a papal knighthood for his interfaith work.

Dr Mohinder Singh was yesterday made a Knight of the Pontifical Order of Pope St Gregory the Great for his work on Catholic-Sikh relations. He is thought to be the first Sikh to receive the award.

More than 120 Sikhs, from Birmingham, London, Leeds, Kenya and India were present in St Chad's Cathedral for Sunda'ys Mass and Investiture conducted by Archbishop Bernard Longley.

A Catholic interfaith dialogue expert, William Ozanne, also received the same honour.

In his homily the archbishop praised the pair for their work and their friendship.

He said: "They have discovered not only within each other, but also within the faith traditions that they represent, an openness to dialogue and a desire to deepen understanding and co-operation for the common good.

"BANGLADESH IS THE BEST EXAMPLE OF

INTER-RELIGIOUS HARMONY IN THE WORLD"

Vatican Insider: Monday 28 May 2012

“In an interview with the new Archbishop of Dhaka, Patrick D’Rozario, speaks about the harmony that exists between the different religions and the role the Catholic Church can play there in the coming years.”…

…”It was in this context that Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, the President of the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue, visited us in April 2011. It was beautiful to see the open-hearted way everyone accepted him - Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians alike. He gave a lecture at a seminar in Dhaka University attended by Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Catholics. After his visit, he said Bangladesh is the best example of inter-religious harmony in the whole world. We truly believe that too because culturally there is that basic harmony in the country. Indeed, this is a heritage we have had for very many years”. …

RELIGION AND PEACE BUILDING:

GRASSROOTS EFFORTS BY ISRAELIS AND PALESTINIANS

Frida Kerner Furman Journal of Religion, Conflict and Peace Spring 2011

IEA is an Israeli organization founded in 2001 whose goal is to promote peace in the Middle East through "interfaith dialogue and cross-cultural study. We believe that … religion can and should be a source of the solution for conflicts that exist in the region and beyond." To this end, Israelis—Jews, Muslims, and Christians—throughout Israel are invited to join neighborhood groups that meet monthly or bimonthly to discuss commonalities and differences across religious traditions.

A number of groups also bring together Israeli citizens and Palestinians from East Jerusalem and from the West Bank. In bringing together ordinary people from contending political, religious, and ideological perspectives, the organization's goal is to develop in these "encounter groups" understanding and respect across the differences that divide them, beginning with religious differences.

This organization thus represents an example of religion utilized as a productive bridge across political divides, which is gaining favor today among many experts in conflict resolution.

INSPIRATION

"Do not be daunted by the enormity of the world's grief.

Do justly, now.
Love mercy, now.

Walk humbly now.

You are not obligated to complete the work,

But neither are you free to abandon it."

The Talmud

I am here only to be truly helpful.
I am here to represent Him who sent me.
I do not have to worry about what to say or what
to do, because He who sent me will direct me.
I am content to be wherever He wishes, knowing
   He goes there with me.
I will be healed as I let Him teach me to heal.

                                                                                                              A Course In Miracles

A TEACHING STORY

In the south of Thailand some years ago, a famous abbot was building a new hall in his forest monastery.

When the Rains Retreat came, he stopped all work and sent the builders home. This was the time for quiet in his monastery.

A few days later a visitor came, saw the half-constructed building and asked the abbot when his hall would be finished. Without hesitation, the old monk said, "The hall is finished."

"What do you mean, 'The hall is finished?' the visitor replied, taken aback. "It hasn't got a roof. There are no doors or windows. There are pieces of wood and cement bags all over the place. Are you going to leave it like that? Are you mad? What do you mean, 'The hall is finished'?''

The old abbot smiled and gently replied, "What's done is finished," and then went away to meditate.

This is the only way to have a retreat or to take a break. Otherwise our work is never finished.
